Antilopes we saw in Tanzania in October 2012. Page meant to help us tell
them apart!
Common waterbuck Shaggy coat, white ellipse on rump (Tarangire) |
Defassa waterbuck Coarse shaggy coat, solid white patch on trunk (Ngorongoro) |
Female and male Bushbucks They live in forests and often associate with baboons, as did these in Lake Manyara NP; the ones we saw had gray stripe around neck, white stripes at inner top of forelegs |
|
Bohor Reedbuck Thick coat |
Impala By far, the most widespread and numerous antilope we saw, at least among those which "look like" antilopes. Beautiful smooth coat |
Klipspringer One of the cutest antilopes, with its striped ears and the way it seems to stand on its toes (Serengeti) |
|
Kirk's Dik Dik The other candidate for cutest, because of its diminutive size, 30-40 cm at the shoulder |
|
Grant's and Thomson's gazelles The "Tommies" have the black stripe along their side. |
Giraffe Yes, the giraffe is a member of the antilope family. |
Topi | |
Wildebeest |
African buffalo |
Yup, these guys are also members of the
antilope family. |
