La Fontaine
From the spring of 1974 to the summer of 1978, we had a country house in the Berry, at a place called (lieu-dit) La Fontaine, not far from Valençay and close to the Loire Valley, famous for its châteaux. We were young and thought it was fun to fix it up. We also loved the peacefulness of it. We got to know some very nice people and places down there. And our animals loved it. So did we.  1974We set out to find a country house which would be not too difficult to fix up and where we could stay while we were doing it. We found a beautiful one, out in the middle of rolling hills, farms and woods in the Berry region, south of the Loire River. The house itself looked so natural, it seemed to have just grown up out of the soil, like a mushroom. |  1975Having furnished and heated the house, we set out to enjoy it. We had lots of friends for visits and we even learned to use a scythe. | |
 1976In 1976, we had part of the land and the pond cleaned up. We continued having friends down for walks and relaxation and peace. |  1977The year 1977 was one of flooding (see picture below) and of sunshine. We were also getting lazier. | |
 1978We continued loving the place in 1978, but we could not make it down from Paris often enough, and mold started growing on our freshly-painted ceiling. We got the message and out.
