The Sud-Schaffgaffal is a fairly easy peak, close to the Douglass-Hütte. There's one slippery spot (we call the "hairy spot") going over the ridge that forms the Lünerkrinne, then it's just up. Sticking to the path is difficult, though there are some cairns other hikers have put up to help. You may sometimes have to backtrack and start over thought. The view from the top is marvellous.
And the Sud-Schafgafall stands out ahead.
The path crosses a slippery spot (the "hairy spot") before reaching a mountain pasture, or Alp.
The summer residents may show up to offer their welcome
It's funny: At first, the mountain seems very steep.
But as you get closer, it seems to flatten out ... and to occupy all the horizon before you.
As you start up, there is a path. But it soon peters out.
Looing back down on the meadow and its residents.
Higher up, with the Lünersee as a backdrop.
Reaching the peak
This is our first visit, in summer of 1986. We went back five times. The cross was destroyed years ago; there is only a stump left beside an antenna of some sort.
Looking back over the Lünerkrinne, with the path going down from it on the left in the shade.
